Unfinished business of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)
The exhibition highlights aspects of the unfinished business of the TRC: the exclusion of survivors of gross human rights violations during apartheid from receiving individual reparations due to the ‘closed’ TRC list; ex-combatant’s difficulties to reintegrate, community reparations and rehabilitation, investigations into disappearances; and investigations and prosecutions of apartheid era crimes of the cases handed to the National Prosecuting Authority by the TRC. The South African government, through the Department of Justice, is responsible for implementing the TRC’s recommendations for reparations and for prosecutions emerging from the amnesty process. The Department of Justice has not fulfilled this mandate.
